Different Uses of Blogs for Student Engagement

Identify at least two different ways to use blogs in the classroom (or you can come up with your own use). Please describe how you would use one of them in your classroom. When done please comment on another colleague's blog idea.

  1. I am very excited to use blogs in the classroom! the ides of having students start a conversation where they can connect and comment on each other's ideas and information. Blogs can be used to begin a conversation about the interpretation of a picture, symbol, or online video. This can be used as a more "technologically advanced" form of best practice teachniques such as picture walks or chalktalks. Also, I loved Nicole's idea about the resource sharing for a test or quiz -- this would be a GREAT benchmark review.

  2. I really appreciated the entire presentation. The ideas that I could most likely incorporate into math would be a place to share different resounces about math topics, such as the study space Nicole mentioned. I would also like to use it as a place to justify or explain how to solve a problem. I could also use it as a resource for students to find websites to study math topics or play math games.

  3. To Lauren,

I love the idea of a technology chalk talk. That would be awesome! The chalk talk could be a resource sharing of websites as well, like post a website that answers the prompt. WOW! Mind blowing!

  4. Math Reflections - Have students explain in words how to solve problems such as: 3x + 2 = 14

Webquests- Have students create a webquest for the class based on objectives you give them - other students can offer ideas on how to improve on their ideas etc.

  5. I would love for my students to make their own blogs. I think it would increase their writing proficiency and could be an online portfolio of their writing. It would be great!

  6. Sarah,

Besides blogging what other type of technology would you consider using in the future.

  9. Emily,

Great idea! Maybe you can ask the ELA teachers to support you with teaching organizational structures so students can expplain their problems in logical order.

  12. I like the fact that blogging gives students the opportunity to interact in a 'deep' thinking manner. They can be given a prompt and students can voice their opinions on the subject. Since their comments are for everyone to see, they will have more of an ownership for their thoughts. It can encourage friendly debates by promoting scholarly phrases. I don't have my own classroom, but the idea of blogging to show your knowledge at school is mind-blowing. Kudos.

  13. We have a practice in Math called think pair share. But I think this is broader in the fact that this will engage the whole class instead of just a pair of students. Students can simply blog if they come up with a new way or process of solving math problems that the teacher have not taught of or not yet anyway. I have questions though that I hope can receive immeditae feedback. First what rules do we need to give to students before blogging. Second is the frequency in a week and how much time do we need to devote in each blogging period. Third issue is the facilities since we only have 2 computer carts that are most often than not are occupied. We need to reserve a month or two in advance to use computers.
